THE SECOND DROP

SIDE A · TRACK 03 · FALL 2026

⏯ REWIND

You know that moment on the dance floor when the music pulls back, the lights go low, and the whole room holds its breath? Nobody leaves. Everybody knows what's coming. That's where I've been living this month. Building something in the quiet. Waiting for the drop.

— Kacy

WHAT’S ACTUALLY LOOPING IN MY HEAD RIGHT NOW

My kitchen table has disappeared under t-shirt mockups, sticker proofs, and one very opinionated throw pillow. Here's what's on repeat upstairs:

♫ The midnight design sessions. Should a grown woman be picking fonts for rave tees at midnight on a weeknight? Apparently yes. Apparently that's who I am now.

♫ The what-ifs. What if nobody wants them? And the scarier one: what if everybody does?

♫ The Halloween party. Still undecided. You'll be the first to know.

That last one is a joke. The first two are not. They're what it feels like to build something you care about.

♫ REMEMBER WHEN

Remember the t-shirt that meant you belonged- that you were there at that moment-just living? For me it was those big, loud 90s street tees from the shops you had to know about. You wore one and strangers on the dance floor nodded at you like family. It said: I was there. I know the words. I waited for the drop, too. ~What did you do with those old t-shirts? Still have a few? I’ve saved so many t-shirts for no reason other than opening the boxes they’re in, every few years, and remembering who I was back then wearing that shirt. All the crazy things I did in that shirt. Sometimes a shirt is better than a photo. Somewhere along the way we traded that shirt for something "age appropriate." I'd like to formally take mine back!

Hit reply and tell me the shirt you'd give anything to have back. I read every one, and the best ones show up in a future issue.

Wait for the Drop

The Build-Up Is Not Wasted Time

In dance music, the drop is the moment everything you've been waiting for hits at once. But every raver who stayed till sunrise knows a secret: the first drop gets the room moving. The second drop is the one that takes the roof off. It comes after the break, after the quiet, after you've caught your breath and decided you're staying.

That's midlife. The first drop was our twenties and thirties, loud and fast and mostly lived for somebody else. Then came the break. The kids, the jobs, the caretaking, the years when the music got so quiet you wondered if the night was over.

It wasn't over, Honey! You're in the build-up. And the build-up is not wasted time. It's where the drop gets its power.

WHAT THE BUILD-UP FEELS LIKE

♫ Like nothing is happening. That's the point. Everything is stacking up underneath where nobody can see it yet.

♫ Like people are leaving the floor. Let them. The ones who stay are your people.

♫ Like something you can feel before you can see. Trust that. Your body knew the drop was coming long before the DJ did.

PRACTICAL ADVICE, FOR RIGHT NOW

01 Name your drop. What are you building toward? Write it in one sentence. Not the five-year plan. One sentence.

02 Count what's already stacked. List three things you did this year that moved you closer, even a little. The build-up counts. Give yourself credit for it.

03 Stop polling the room. Your second drop doesn't need a vote. No permission required.

♫ FIRST LOOK · YOU'RE SEEING IT BEFORE ANYBODY ELSE

Wait for the Drop, by Kacy Shaw

Forever Ravers. New Rules.

So here's what's been eating my kitchen table. I've been building a collection for those of us who danced till sunrise and never really stopped: oversized tees, a dad hat, a beanie, stickers, and a throw pillow grown-up enough for a real living room. No midlife jokes. No "over the hill." Just the shirt you used to love, made for who you are now.

♫ Handle With Bass. Fragile. Contains one Gen X raver.

♫ Play It Loud Mixtape. For everyone who ever made a tape with a hand-written label.

♫ Side B Record. The best songs were always on Side B.

♫ Second Drop Sound System. Every crew had one. This one's yours.

The doors open soon, and you'll get the link before I post it anywhere else. Watch your inbox.

Hit reply with the one you'd wear first and your size. I'm reading every answer, and it decides what I make more of.

FROM THE AUTHOR

Every shirt in that collection starts in the same place the book did: with the idea that you don't need anybody's sign-off to be who you've always been. If you haven't picked up The Second Drop or the Companion Workbook yet, consider this your sign.

“You’ve already survived the first draft. This is where you title the sequel.” — The Second Drop Companion Workbook

The room went quiet. That just means the drop is coming. Stay on the floor.

P.S. Forward this to the friend who was right next to you on the dance floor. She'll know exactly what I mean.

♫ PASS IT ON

The Liner Notes: Affirmations for the Build-Up

This part never made it to your inbox. Read these out loud. In the car counts. In the school pickup line counts double.

♫ I am not late. I am in the build-up.

♫ My best chapter is not behind me. It's loading.

♫ I don't need the room's permission to dance.

♫ What I'm building is allowed to take time.

♫ I was there. I know the words. I'm still here.

Pick the one that made you flinch a little. That's the one you need. Write it on a sticky note and put it where you'll see it every morning.
